LASIK, commonly referred to as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction is used to treat near-sightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It is the most common type of laser surgery. For most patients, LASIK provides permanent alternative to eyeglasses or contact lenses.
What happens during LASIK ?
During a LASIK procedure, the cornea is reshaped and adjusted :
To improve far vision, the cornea is flattened
To improve near vision, the curve of the cornea is steepened
To treat astigmatism, the irregularities in the cornea are smoothened
LASIK procedure typically takes about 15 minutes
In the first step, eye drops are applied to the numb eye and additional medication is given to help relax.
Accessing the cornea: A device will be used to stabilize the eye. The surgeon creates a thin flap in the cornea, which can be temporarily folded away.
Reshaping the cornea: Using a computer controlled laser, pulses of light is directed at the eye to reshape the cornea. The last step of LASIK procedure is the surgeon repositioning the corneal flap. It will stay in place naturally and heal within hours.
Recovery : Following the LASIK eye surgery, the surgeon will examine the eyes once again. For most people, vision is normal within eight hours from the surgery.
Mainly, it provides immediate results within hours of the surgery. It also gives freedom from contact lenses and glasses
It is a painless surgery
No bandages or stitches are required
Less chances of infection
Lenses can be permanently removed
